Dot NAME Domain Names

Introduced in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domains remained online.
